Feb 27 - Mozart, Warhol & Elvis

On Vh1 Country, which seems to rarely play anything new, saw Lee Ann Wommack's Something Worth Leaving Behind where she name checks all of the above.

Feb 26 - EW once again comes thru after a few bad weeks

Maybe I haven't been reading closely enough or maybe it's just Oscar-buzz is rarely Elvis-related, but Entertaiment Weekly hasn't been so good lately with Elvis mentions. But this week's issue strikes back, with a quarter page ad for the Love Me Tender DVD and a mention in Stephen King's backpage column about "a truck driver cutting a reocrd for his mama can become a star."

Feb 26 - A great musical star?

I'm reading Peter Bogdonovich's book Movie of the Week, and it starts with Singing in the Rain. In the first few paragraphs, he explains how the best musicals are built around musical stars-- and includes Elvis in an impressive list that includes Fred & Ginger, Gene Kelly, etc.

Feb 25 - the first Mrs. Beatle's tell-all

Picked up Cynthia Lennon's book "John" at the library and flipped thru mostly looking at the pictures, but then I saw the start of one chapter said something like "Brian Epstein always said the Beatles could be bigger than Elvis..."

Feb 25 - In Giuliana's bedroom

At work, watched raw footage of Celebrity Living with a designer redoing Giuliana's apartment. In the bedroom, the designer made three large Warholish prints of celebrity mug shots, including 70's Elvis police ID shot (which isn't technically a mug shot) surrounded by Steve McQueen's and Sid Vicious's mug shots.

Feb 25 - Elvis Impersonators in photo montage

At work, in the news room getting the news theme laid to DAT, watched a montage of silly stills on their monitor, including a bunch of Elvis impersonators surrounding someone. Lots of Michael Jackson photos, too. That's two degrees of separation...

Feb 23 - Hold "music" at work

At work, when on hold, you hear E! News reports. Today's hold report was on "the King's Daughter's" 4th marriage.

Feb 23 - Different Girl, Different Elvis Purse

Saw a second girl at work with a completely different Elvis rhinestone-enhanced purse (again, not this particular one). Where are they all getting these bags?!

Feb 23 - Flipping thru the Pocket DJ

The first song in "Just Plain Sexy" is a song by Brand New. I had to look up the lyrics to see what it had to do with Elvis. Darned if I know...

Me Vs. Maradona Vs. Elvis Lyrics

With one or two I get used to the room
We go slow when we first make our moves
'Bout five or six bring you out to the car
Number nine with my head on the bar (in the bar)
And its sad, but true
Out of cash and I.O.Us.

I got desperate desires and (unadmirable) plans
My tongue will taste of gin and malicious intent
Bring you back to the bar, get you out of the cold
A sober straight face, gets you out of your clothes
And they're scared, that we know
All the crimes they'll commit
Who they'll kiss before they get home.

I will lie awake
Lie for fun and fake the way I hold you
Let you fall for every empty word I say.

Barely conscious in the door where you stand
Your eyes are fighting sleep while
Your mouth makes your demands
You laugh at every word
Trying hard to be cute
I almost feel sorry for what I'm gonna do
And your hair smells of smoke
Who will cast the first stone?
You can sin or spend the night all alone.

Brass buttons on your coat hold the cold,
In the shape of a heart
That they cut out of stone
You're using all your looks
That you've thrown from the start
If you let me have my way, I swear I'll tear you apart
Cause its all you can be
You're a drunk
And your scared
Its ladies night, all the girls drink for free.

I will lie awake
and lie for fun and fake the way I hold you
let you fall for every empty word I say.

I will lie awake
And lie for fun and fake the way I hold you
Let you fall for every empty word I say.

I will lie awake
And lie for fun and fake the way I hold you
Let you fall for every empty word I say.

Feb 22 - Amazon Recommends

Today Amazon is recommending for me 2 Kenny Chesney DVDs and Elvis by the Presleys.

Feb 22 - Checkout line at Amoeba

Tonight after dinner I dropped by Amoeba to buy the Artic Monkeys CD after hearing it on Jonesy's Jukebox, and while I was paying a whole rack of vintage Elvis albums was eye level.

Feb 22 - Sunday's Paper on Tuesday

Two mentions -- one in the article about Happy Days -- the stage play -- where the young lead says he's listening to Elvis. Second -- a short article about how the EP first album artwork continues to be adapted, from the Clash to kd lang.:POP MUSIC
If it worked once, why not try again?

Music stars love to do new versions of old hits, but sometimes they also like to do covers of, well, album covers.

Elvis Presley's debut album for RCA Records was a rush job — it was 1956, and no one was sure that this new hubbub called "rock 'n' roll" would last long. But its distinctive cover caught the imagination of a generation with its energy and style.

Its intrigue has aged well — the Clash copped the lettering and black-and-white performance photo for "London Calling," a 1979 album that made a good bit of rock history on its own by upping the ante for punk rock.

The Clash cover (a Pennie Smith photo showing the band's Paul Simonon smashing his bass) was in turn given homage last year on "Tony Hawk's American Wasteland," a CD that has as much to do with skateboarding as with guitar amps.

Next up: k.d. lang's new CD, "Reintarnation," which shows that old RCA Elvis photo remains the once and future king of album motifs. The title of the April 25 release, by the way, is a neologism for finding oneself "reincarnated as a hillbilly," according to lang's record label. But don't mention that to Elvis.

Feb 21 - Blender Top Dead Rock Stars

Elvis comes in at #3, topped by the Notorious B.I.G. and Johnny Cash (number 1). To add insult to injury, no photo!

However, in the Hard Rock suppliment thing, there is a tiny photo of the Love Me Tender movie theater in NY with the giant billboard of Elvis.

Feb 19 - Steve Coogan mentions Elvis

After seeing Tristian Shandy, decided to listen to the commentary on 24 Hour Party People -- and at one point Steve Coogan says it was like seeing Elvis, seeing the Sex Pistols. Or words to that effect. I was very tired when listening....

Feb 18 - Britney to Elvis

Towards the back of the scandalous Hollywood issue of Vanity Fair is the thing where it takes 5 photos to morph from one person to another -- and this month it's Ms. Spears to Mr. P (both Vegas white-jumpsuit era). Still, EP makes the Hollywood issue!

Feb 16 - Lindsay Lohan Issue

The new issue of Premiere with Lindsay Lohan on the cover arrives today, and flipping thru I was so impressed to see a half page ad for the new Elvis Presley DVD of Love Me Tender. It comes out at the end of the month -- and I can't wait to get it to see if I made the cut in the documentaries featured on the DVD.

Feb 15 - More Country Weekly

Actually reading the issue this time, I saw a review of the Wanda Jackson Remembers Elvis album and one other mention or photo of EP. Can't remember now, but I remember being impressed that that issue had 3 mentions so far and I'm not even done reading yet!

Feb 14 - And the Jordanaires

Somehow my Country Weeklys were backed up in the mail (surely the mailman can't be reading that magazine of all the ones I subscribe to!) but the one before this issue just came, and flipping thru I saw a huge photo of Elvis and his backing group -- the article was on the Jordaniares...

FEB 13 - Make up your own song

On Monday, Steve Jones on indie 103.1 ruminated about the upcoming Valentine's day and made up a song about getting married in Vegas by "the King." And of course, sang like Elvis.

Feb 11 - Atomic While It Lasts

With the loss of indie record stores Rhino & Arons, felt the need to stop by Atomic on Magnolia when I was driving by tonight. Checking out the cheapo VHS tapes, saw many Elvis movies.... Since I have the complete set, passed them up.

Feb 11 - Elvis + Warhol Irresistable?

At SkybluPink, finally came across the Andy Warhol messenger bags -- and almost bought the Elvis one -- but $68 is a little too steep, and I don't have enough stuff to fill a messenger bag. But did appreciate the genius of it. P.S. The Elvis image is not this color one but the B/W.

Feb 10 - Airport Muzak

As I approached the self-service Southwest Ticket Machine, EP blared over the speakers at Burbank Airport.

Feb 9 - Elevator encounter

At work in the elevator, I encountered a woman I had worked with previously and when she left the lift a floor before me I saw she had an Elvis bag (not the same one pictured) with Aloha Elvis with rhinestones.

Feb 4 - How could I overlook Elvis's head as tall as building

How often have I driven down Highland from the Valley and never noticed that there's a mural of John Wayne, Elvis, Marilyn and Chaplin? This morning, I noticed. P.S. Couldn't find a real picture, so this image is not of the Elvis head tall as a building that I actually saw.
