March 31 - Two for Two

Not completely thru this week's issue, but for the second week in a row EW comes thru -- this time in an obit for Country songwriter Cindy Walker (who wrote some songs that Elvis covered, and of course Willie Nelson just released a tribute album for her).

March 30 - Coworkers Unite!

Over the cubicle divide, I hear Kat say "Can you believe Graceland is a historical landmark?" And Vikki says "Don't you be saying anything bad about the King!"

March 28 - Enough about Graceland already!

In the E! News homepage, in the elevator again, everywhere... I'm sick of being bombarded about it!

March 26 - Elvis Art

Picked up a book on Peter Blake at the library and opened it in the middle to decide if it was worth checking out -- and the random page had a mention about collecting Elvis photos....

March 26 - EW strikes again

In that annoying "Hit List," which I always read although I hate it so, #10 is about the tv Elvis shot being displayed at Graceland.

March 24 - Charlie Rose's guest

Tonight's William F. Buckly, and there was a montage of book covers, including his Elvis in the Morning book.

March 24 - News from unlikely sources

I get most of my news from the elevator at work, which has a screen like you see at Supermarket check out lines. Today the elevator announced that Graceland is now a national landmark.

Here's more complete info form an article from a newspaper:
MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Elvis fans already consider Graceland a national landmark.

Interior Secretary Gale Norton will arrive in Memphis on Monday for ceremonies to make the designation official.

The home of Elvis Presley, which hosts more than 600,000 tourists a year, will join the Alamo, Pearl Harbor, the White House and Mt. Vernon as a National Historic Landmark.

Graceland, bought by Elvis in 1957 for $103,000 with earnings from his first hit record, "Heartbreak Hotel," will be one of 27 Tennessee sites on a list of about 2,500 national landmarks.

The Interior Department calls these "exceptional" places on its Web page. "They form a common bond between all Americans. While there are many historic places across the nation, only a small number have meaning to all Americans — these we call our National Historic Landmarks."

"Graceland is so famous it is arguable that on a worldwide basis it is the second most famous home in America," said Elvis Presley Enterprises chief executive officer Jack Soden.

"You go to the far corners of the Earth, and they don't really know what Mt. Vernon or Monticello or Hearst Castle are, but they know what Graceland is. It is kind of in a class of its own."

Graceland has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1991.

Graceland officials are pursuing plans to expand tourism and have just opened two new exhibits in Memphis: "Elvis After Dark," which expores the King of Rock 'n' Roll's nightowl habits, and "Elvis 56," which focuses on the explosion of Presley's career in 1956, when he got his first gold record and his first big-time TV exposure.

March 23 - Paint by Numbers?

Searching for a Robbie Williams picture, came across the painting hosted at an Elvis artist's website.

March 23 - In the circular file

So I'm in an editing bay, throwing something in the trash, and I see this printout of photos of controversial people like Pee Wee Herman. I pull out all three pages just to see whose on it, and Elvis is on page 3 in all of his druggy glory.

March 21 - Elvis After Dark

Going to Yahoo to check the headlines, the AP service offered a video report of the new Graceland exhibit, Elvis After Dark -- on Yahoo's main page.

March 22 - Now or Never

When searching iTunes for Nick Carter's solo album, Now or Never, Mr. Presley's classic shows up.

March 22 - Pin Up Boy

In an office of a coworker, I spotted a calendar hanging with Charro! as the artwork. Turns out it's an entire calendar of Elvis movie posters -- $4.99 at Rite Aid (I asked). Kicking myself that I didn't get one. Maybe there are a few still remaining....

March 20 - Dreaming or not?

I was dreaming that someone was asking me how I knew a country gospel song, and I said "Because Elvis sang it," and then I realized Elvis really was singing it -- I opened my eyes and I had fallen asleep with an HBO Channel playing and I guess an Elvis movie was playing and it ends with him singing a gospel song. What movie was it? He was wearing a light blue jacket. I fell back asleep without paying attention.

March 19 - We Get Letters

This week's issue has letter from readers about Elvis's daughter's wedding. One makes reference to Elvis's looking down from Heaven and singing "Only fools rush in."

March 16 - Girls can be Elvis impersonators too

Looking thru footage at work, accidentally came across someone in Vegas who was a female EP tribute artist.

March 11 - Shoot Jennings in that shirt

My brother showed me the photo of Waylon's very talented kid in Vanity Fair, not knowing I've already seen him wearing this exact same shirt in Country weekly.

March 4 - Johnny Cash remembers Elvis on 60 Minutes Recut

CMT showed an old Harry Reasoner interview with Johnny Cash from the early 1980s on one of those 60 Minutes Uncut specials -- and Johnny talked about being on the Elvis Presley Show and when asked if he liked Elvis, he said, yes, Elvis was a good man.

March 3 - Bill Maher again

On Real Time with Bill Maher, guest DL Hughley said about George Bush's low approval rating that more people believe Elvis is alive than approve of the president.

March 2 - The Lesser Teen Idol

Bought the latest Greatest Hits -- because it was only $15 at Best Buy. Of course, the liner notes are all Elvis-related as Ricky was from the Presley era.

March 2- Alan Jackson's latest

In reading the Amazon reviews of Alan Jackson's gospel album, I see that one person says if you love the classic gospel albums of George Jones, Dolly Parton or Elvis, you'll love this one.

March 1 - Bill Maher loves a cheap Elvis joke

Caught the last half of a 2000 Bill Maher special on HBO -- and he did a cheap Elvis joke about what kills us is food, etc. "and whatever Elvis was doing." I had to go back and search this blog since I know I had a Bill Maher Elvis joke before and wanted to make sure it wasn't this special, although I was pretty sure I had never seen this special. Sure enough, the other two cheap Elvis jokes he made were different arenas.

March 1 - Walk the Line in Country Weekly

Only two pages into the new Country Weekly, and there's an "advertorial" on Walk the Line DVD, including a photo and description of the actor playing Sam Phillips, saying he discovered Cash, Jerry Lee and Elvis.

Also on Pag3 10, a story about valentine's day, women picked Elvis's "I can't help falling in love with you" as the most romantic song.

Feb 28 - Hal Ketchum's Small Town Saturday Night

Caught the end of a Grand Ole Opry on GAC with Alan Jackson singing gospel and hal Ketchum singing his big hit which starts with "there's an Elvis movie on the marquee sign."
