Garth Brooks Comes Out of Retirement

Posted Aug 3rd 2007 1:00PM by Beville Darden
Filed under: Country, Album News

Garth Brooks is coming out of retirement ... again. The country megastar is set to release a two-disc compilation on Big Machine Records, the independent label that recently signed his wife Trisha Yearwood.

Though the release date has yet to be named, the effort will reportedly include four new songs plus 30 of his biggest hits. The CDs will also come with a DVD featuring 33 of Brooks' music videos.

Despite "officially" retiring in 2001, Brooks has released a greatest-hits box set and 'Lost Sessions' CD through Wal Mart, as well as 2005's highest-debuting single, 'Good Ride Cowboy' -- a tribute to his late friend, country star Chris LeDoux. This new project, however, will be Brooks' first label-distributed album since 2001's 'Scarecrow.'

With over 115 million albums sold in the U.S. alone, Brooks is second only to Elvis Presley in album sales by a solo artist.

August 1 - Unexpected metion

In a LA Times profile of the writes of BALLS OF FURY: Lennon and Garant's "Balls of Fury" has been floating around since 2000, when they first came across an article about Werner Schlager, an Austrian ping-pong champion with Elvis-like fame in Asia usually reserved for martial arts masters.

August 1 - In some TV recap online

Is an Elvis impersonator winning a celebrity-impersonator contest, à la ABC's The Next Best Thing (18th place, 7.1 million), an inevitability, or a letdown?

July 14 - Somewhere in EW

I'm trying to catch up on sightings... Can't remember what it was now....

June 18 - Blender mention, per usual

Give it up for Blender, which almost always features EP. This one references the Comeback. Of course, it's not this cover -- this was was the cover from 2 issues ago. The new one has Kelly Clarkson on the cover.

June 28 - Something about Australia

by clutching an exasperated Kerri-Anne in a bear hug to reminisce about the deaths of Princess Diana, Elvis, and his own career, in that order. As they say in Australia: Enjoy.

June 28 - Kelly Willis has a new record out

Willis invokes her Elvis-inspired, early-'90s days on "Teddy Boys," a fun little song where she can't help but impart some of her romantic warmth. Willis is even more in her element on the knowing duo of "Losing You," written with Prophet and graced with subtle banjo and steel guitar, and "Too Much to Lose," an elegant portrayal of Willis' relationship with Robison, who harmonizes.

June 28 - Herb loves dressing like Elvis

I read a report saying how the founder of Southwest likes to dress like Elvis -- and just now as I was searching for his photo I found this on the photo page: The wild turkey

(September 1, 2001) Herb Kelleher chain-smokes, loves Wild Turkey whiskey and is often seen dressing up as Elvis.

In an industry that's roundly reviled by customers, Southwest Airlines largely stands alone. Thanks to the extremely effective, maverick-cum-evangelistic leadership of Kelleher, Southwest has outlasted competitors big and small to become bigger than all of them combined.

June 19 - Wanna watch?

I think I put the wrong images with each post of these last two, but can't be bothered to fix it. This was supposed to illustrate the following: The 50th anniversary of the release of "Jailhouse Rock" will be observed with a screening July 27, including an appearance by renowned songwriters Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, who wrote most of the tunes that Elvis Presley sang in the movie.

June 16 - All over Blender

As always, Blender has not updated their site with the current cover -- of the White Stripes. Mention of Jack Black playing Elvis is a movie, and also in the 100 events that effected Rock and Roll (or something like that) Elvis is all over it.

June 15 - Two mentions, by Brando & Mae West

In a book of Playboy interviews with Larger than Life personalities, Mae West mentions Elvis was less popular when he got married, and the Marlon Brando has a whole speech about Elvis: Elvis Presley -- bloated, over the hill, adolescent entertainer, suddenly drawing people into Las Vegas -- had nothing to do with excellence, just myth. It's convenient for people to believe that something is wonderful, therefore they're wonderful.

June 6 - Beatle on Elvis

From this week's Newsweek: You wrote the most-covered song ever: "Yesterday." Do you ever get sick of it?
Not really, no. If you'd have written "Yesterday," would you? [Laughs] It's one of those, man. Come on! It's one of the most mystical things that ever happened to me, waking up one morning with that tune in my head. I mean, that's pretty far out. Recently, though, I realized I'd hardly heard any of these 3,000 cover versions. [Laughs] So I had someone make me a CD of the 10 most amazing covers: you know, Frank Sinatra, Elvis [Presley], Marvin Gaye, Ray Charles. The funniest thing was, three or four of them changed the lyric very subtly. Fabulous! In the middle I go, [sings] "I said something wrong, now I long for yesterday." I own up: "I said something wrong." But they don't! They go, [sings] "I must've said something wrong." [Laughs] Like, "I doubt very much whether I did. I must've. 'Cause she's gone." Check 'em out. See if they do "I must've said something wrong." Certainly Elvis does. He's not admitting a thing.
